Twenty birds

Each one changes the rules

One nest in every row, every column and every colour, and no two nests touching. Then each bird adds a rule of its own.

Woodland

  • Robin The basic rules, and nothing else.
  • Barn owl The same rules at night, with a few nests already placed.
  • Woodpecker Every nest has to touch a tree.
  • Sparrowhawk No nest next to a goshawk’s post.
  • Jay Every nest has to touch an oak.

Meadow and hedgerow

  • Magpie The nest goes on one of the shiny squares.
  • Goldfinch Two nests share a colour, in the same column.
  • Starling Three nests share a colour, and may touch at a corner.
  • Wren Wrens are allowed to touch at a corner.
  • Swift One colour gets no nest at all.

Wetland

  • Bittern Nests go on the edge, or next to a reed.
  • Cuckoo One colour is hiding two nests.
  • Swans A pair shares a colour, touching at a corner.
  • Mallard Each nest sits beside its duckling.
  • Heron Each nest must see water along its row or column.

River and coast

  • Kingfisher Every nest has to touch water.
  • Dipper Nests go behind a waterfall.

About

Nyth is a logic puzzle about where British birds build their nests. If you have played Star Battle or “two not touch” puzzles, you already know the idea, and the level at the top of this page is how it starts.

Each bird has its own trail of 50 levels, so there are 1,000 in all. Before a new bird turns up, a short lesson shows its rule on a small practice board and walks you through the first move. Every level can be solved by logic, so you never have to guess.

The Reserve

Win levels and your birds move into the Reserve, which has a garden for each of the four habitats: woodland, meadow and hedgerow, wetland, and river and coast. The further you get along a bird’s trail, the more its family grows: a nest, a mate, eggs, chicks and then the young. The seeds you earn pay for things to put in the garden, and some of those bring visitors.

Every bird you meet also gets a page in your Journal, with facts about how it lives, a map of where to see it in Britain, and its call. The birdsong in the game comes from real recordings.

A puzzle a day, and no timer

There is a new Daily puzzle every day, a streak if you want one, and Free play for any bird you have already met. The main levels have no timer, and you can leave one halfway and carry on later. If you get stuck, Clear crosses off the squares where no nest can go, and Reveal places the next nest and tells you why.

Free, with ads

Nyth will be free to play, with ads: a small banner on some screens, a full-screen ad between levels now and then (never after a loss), and videos you can choose to watch for an extra egg, a Reveal or some seeds. You can pay once to remove the ads, and there are packs of seeds and Reveals if you want them, but you never need to pay to reach a level.

The name

Nyth is Welsh for “nest”. You say it “nith”, so it rhymes with “with”. It is coming to iPhone first, with Android to follow.
